In the age of pop music and blockbuster films, of memes and viral videos, we often forget that theatre was one of the original forms of popular entertainment. We will focus on theatre practitioners including actors, directors, designers and backstage personnel to understand how theatre is produced. We will also consider popular entertainment in Europe and America, with a particular focus on musical theatre and Broadway to explore how theatre communicates, resonates, and remains relevant to all audiences.

Introduction to the analysis and critique of the play script. Students will have the opportunity to read, analyze, and interpret western dramatic literature from a range of periods and styles. Computer programming is quickly becoming an essential skill for designers in all fields. This course will provide an introduction to object-oriented programming through the use of Processing, a Java-based programming language for the electronic arts, new media art, and visual design. This course will explore the use of computer programming to generate imagery and interactivity utilizing various algorithms, user & sensor inputs, and data within the scope of media design for live performance.

This seminar will investigate dance and performance as both a subject area and a mode of inquiry. We will investigate examples from contemporary choreography and performance, including a variety of concert and theatrical dance styles, and other movement practices. In conjunction with readings and discussions from dance history and theory, performance and cultural studies, we will consider different areas of the field of dance studies. We will address questions of subjectivity, location, audience, ommodification, conventionality, staging and the representation of ody politics. Students are expected to engage in critical viewing of dances and performances, conduct in-depth analyses of readings, participate in class discussions, give a presentation, and produce a final research paper.
