Explores the cultural, historical, educational, and medical roots of difference among human beings and examines the impact of cultural and technological changes on individuals traditionally identified as disabled. The course is designed to develop a broad understanding of the concept of "disability" and the emerging technologies that shape contemporary understanding of this phenomenon and the lives of those considered disabled.

This course provides a structured opportunity for students to engage in a peer-led dialogue on a compelling hot button issue that has important implications for our society. These kinds of topics often elicit strong opinions and have the potential to be divisive. The topic for this dialogue is not predetermined; students who enroll will be sent an electronic survey where they will rank potential dialogue topics based on their interest.

This course focuses on the comprehensive process of identifying, preparing, and applying for funding through grant applications. Topics include the identification of funding sources, description of grant application procedures and components, development of budgets, and post-award topics. Major components of the course include preparing a small grant application, outlining a federal grant application, and participating in the peer-review process. This course focuses on federal agencies, foundations, and doctoral-level mechanisms, and will cover the mechanics of proposal writing, the political and social aspects of the application and peer-review process, and tailoring proposals to specific audience and agency interests.
