Explorations in Arts and Humanities; Mapping Slave Biographies and the Industries of Enslavement

This course engages students in first-hand archival, historical, and digital work on the history of enslavement in America so that we might better understand its long-reaching effects. Students will work with public databases, historical maps, and biographical materials in an effort to recover what we can of the histories of the enslaved and the industries of enslavement. Though this course takes a broad approach to American slavery, we will also pay special attention to the history of slavery in Maryland and Washington, DC.

Why do we retreat to imaginary worlds? What are the benefits-and dangers-of escape? How does fantasy serve us in times of crisis? How did graffiti scrawls like "Frodo lives!" become popular slogans of counterculture and protest? This course explores the possibilities and pitfalls inherent to the fantastic in the arts and humanities, emphasizing in particular the role fantasy plays in diagnosing and addressing injustice.

Building upon the evolving discussions of race and racism in our society, this course consists of readings and musical tracks that tell the story of the confrontation between American political principles and the practice of racial injustice throughout our history. Applying the research methods and disciplinary perspectives of musicology, we will trace the ways that discourses on race have morphed in the United States, and we will consider the ramifications of these ideas on the endurance of racism in our society.

How has the ancient Japanese haiku form adapted to the modern world? In this course, we will consider the history of haiku and explore how haiku has been used to address such issues as poverty, racism, sexism, climate change, and war. Students will also write their own haiku on the social issues that concern them.

How do we engage with, embrace, or push back against various science fiction visions of the future? And what does that tell us about ourselves and our collective futures? Students will examine how science fiction texts-- including novels, short stories, movies, and television-- and science fiction scholarship-- intersect with writers and readers (including women, LGBTQ people, people of color, people with disabilities, and indigenous populations) and with current political movements, trends, and "identity politics."

Discover and unleash your deeper self through the invigorating and restorative power of dance. Focusing on modern, contemporary, experimental dance and physical theater; this class asks you to engage with the visual and kinetic nature of the art form, to study different approaches to inspiration, experimentation, movement vocabulary, research, content building, and structure. No prior dance experience required.

An introduction to cultural institutions in the United States, while providing student exposure to the professional environment artist find themselves in. In order for artist and arts administrators to succeed after their educational experience it is critical to understand the history of their respective field, and which events and questions have shaped, and are shaping, their industry. This course is very much an interdisciplinary initiative. Over the past century the arts have become ever-more integrated with one another resulting in a requirement of not only understanding one discipline, but how other disciplines affect a particular practice.

Introduction to the theory and practice of scriptwriting with an opportunity to read, view, evaluate, write, and revise texts meant to be performed. Students will practice writing for the stage, film, and television and also examine selected scripts, performances, and film and television clips as models for their own creative work. Students will complete frequent writing exercises, participate in workshops, and learn to apply scholarship to the analysis and critique of scripts.

Students will learn how careers in play shape our society and about the countless careers in this fun, dynamic field for individuals with diverse, transferable skills. This class will share how emerging trends in content, technology, and approaches to identity and stereotypes shape the industry, its workforce, and its social impact. From Marketing, Accounting, Advocacy and Communications, to Design, Engineering, Law, Supply Chain and Entrepreneurship this is a constantly evolving industry that has the power to shape minds and our world through the power of play.

Designed for students who are in their first semester at the University of Maryland and/or students who wish to complete legislative internships, some start-up internships and some remote internships. All students must be enrolled in an ARHU major or minor and the internship must be in one of the academic fields covered within the College of Arts and Humanities. In addition to completing their required hours on site, students will be required to attend three bi-weekly seminars at the beginning of the semester to help develop their para-professional goals and understandings.

Our ability to create and maintain meaningful social connections tells us that we are not alone; it reminds us that we are connected to something larger, a community, a group of people willing to celebrate our triumphs and help us cope during difficult times. Emphasizing the principles of participation, connection, and collaboration, this course explores how various traditionally marginalized people form their own cultural communities and develop a sense of reciprocal belonging through the creation (and independent distribution) of stories, poems, spoken word poetry, comics and zines.In spite of intersectional obstacles such as the lack of political power, access to resources and economic opportunities, these communities may find it possible to redefine their place in society by demonstrating originality, resilience, and talent.

The TV Writers Room Screenwriting for Television and Video

Students engage with the theory and practice of screenwriting for television and video. Students read and watch teleplays designed to teach advantages of the television format. Students apply what they learn to prepare frequent writing exercises, share and provide feedback for peers scripts in a workshop format, and work together as a Writers Room to prepare an original pilot episode.
