This 1-credit practical course introduces students to the work and graduate studies application process in Germany and the US and focuses specifically on developing effective cross- and intercultural communication skills to navigate the work-culture in Germany, creating a strong resume, refining interview skills in English and German, acquiring work-etiquettes, and building professional network connections in both countries.

Introduction to ecological thinking followed by study of artistic and literary works thematically grouped by the four elements: Earth, Water, Air, and Fire. Readings from the German literary tradition (Goethe, Tieck, Stifter, Kafka, Frisch, Wolf) and contemporary research in the environmental humanities, with additional readings and viewings from elsewhere on the planet. Focusing on the New German Cinema as a movement and genre, we will examine how the works of major auteur directors developed new aesthetic forms to engage with the Nazi past, colonialism and migration, feminist and queer liberation, and left politics.
