An overview of the goals, functions, and methods of public health. After an introduction to the core concepts and tools used in public health research and practice, applications of these methodologies are considered in the context of current controversies/problems in public health. Students work together to develop strategies for prevention and control that take into consideration different points of view, outside research, and impacts on individuals and communities.
Public Health Engagement
Restriction: Restricted to transfer students with 60 credits or less.
Designed to immediately engage transfer students into the professional culture of public health, this course will focus upon successfully negotiating a large public institution while emphasizing the importance of 1) intellectual scholarship, 2) cultivation of mentor relationships, 3) internships, 4) career opportunities, and 5) direct engagement in the improvement of personal health through physical activity.
