Study of the various ways in which French writers have described America and the United States since the discovery of the "New World." Particular attention will be paid to the political and sociological implications of their narratives, as well as to their invention of a continent and nation that constitutes a "cultural mirror." Readings will include works by Jean de Lery, Alexis de Tocqueville, Gustave de Beaumont, J.J. Servan-Schreiber, Simone de Beauvoir, J.F. Revel, Thomas Snegaroff.
