Credits: 3
Grad Meth: Reg, Aud
Prerequisite: ARCH 225/226 or equivalent.

In this course, we use the Mediterranean Sea as a framework for exploring architecture and cities in the early modern period (1450- 1750). We look at key cities - Rome, Istanbul, Aleppo, Venice, Granada, Algiers - with the aim of discovering parallels and contrasts between urban form, architecture, and society under Christian and Islamic rule. Themes include: religious complexes as urban design; social life and public space; trade and commerce; building cultures, technologies, and infrastructure; social classes and religious groups; and the impact of war on urban form.
