These films, censored, challenged, or banned on political, social, sexual, religious grounds, and for violent contents, will provide fascinating material to consider the relationship between culture and politics, morality and ideology. Films may come from the United States, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, Italy, Canada, China, India, Thailand, Germany, and Belgium.

We will analyze the central features of this medium and the pivotal role it continues to play in regional politics and culture. A particular focus will be on transnational television genres, including scripted series, talk shows, and reality TV.

In this asynchronous course, we will examine the transnational history of the horror genre in cinema through the 20th and 21st centuries. We will explore the defining features of the genre and interrogate the status of horror film as one of the most enduring and popular forms of filmmaking. We will also look at horror films as social forms capable of intercepting and giving shape to the collective desires, hopes, and anxieties that mark specific historical periods.
