Discovering Architecture
Credits: 3
Grad Meth: Reg, P-F, Aud
Prerequisite: Permission of ARCH-Architecture Program.
Introduction to architecture and design studio education. The course examines fundamental design principles and skills related to architecture. The design studio projects apply ideas and concepts introduced in lectures, readings and on site visits. The design studio projects are both analytic and synthetic in nature. The explicit goals of the course are: To explore the discipline of architecture; To promote visual thinking and representational skills; To develop analytic design thinking skills; To learn some of the conventions of architectural representation; To enhance cultural awareness of architecture and design.
Students learn about careers in architecture, landscape architecture and urban planning. Architecture faculty teach basic design principles that students use to complete their own design project in a design studio environment.

ARCH408
Special Topics Architecture Design Studio; The University: An Architecture of Assembly and Performance
Credits: 6
Grad Meth: Reg, P-F, Aud
Summer Design Studio, open to both Undergraduates and Graduate Students, will introduce students of varying ability to the fundamental elements of architectural design through an initial series of dynamic design exercises of increasing scope and complexity that build upon one another over the span of the studio, and culminate in the design of an interactive University Exhibition Pavilion and Plaza for assembly and performance. The studio will initially explore fundamental architectural concepts through a sequence of spaces centered on assembly, interaction, communication, recreation, and memory, exploring the tectonic aspects of structural selection, material value and performative enclosure design. In this way, the studio will progress from a series of exercises grounded in the exploration of fundamental architectural concepts, to an understanding of how the combination of these spaces can produce new, dynamic and unexpected relationships between civic and individual spaces shaping culturally impactful spaces and experiences in the University environment.
ARCH418E
Selected Topics in Architectural Technology; EcoTech - Harnessing AI and ML for Sustainable Design
Credits: 3
Grad Meth: Reg, P-F, Aud
EcoTech explores the intersection of technology with sustainable architecture, emphasizing how AI and ML are revolutionizing green building designs. This course covers EcoTech's essentials within architecture, introducing various strategies and tech innovations for crafting eco-conscious, intelligent structures. Starting with AI and ML's basics and their roles in big data and predictive analytics, it explores their impact on advancing sustainable design. Students gain a comprehensive understanding through real-world examples, intensive workshops, and insights into industry-leading AI applications. The course aims to provide the insights and tools necessary for leading the creation of smart, sustainable buildings, highlighting a significant advancement in architectural innovation.
