Discusses the films' production, fan engagement, and its legacy through sequels, theme parks in New Zealand, and shows and films made to ride on the popularity and style.

In this asynchronous course, we will examine the transnational history of the horror genre in cinema through the 20th and 21st centuries. We will explore the defining features of the genre and interrogate the status of horror film as one of the most enduring and popular forms of filmmaking. We will also look at horror films as social forms capable of intercepting and giving shape to the collective desires, hopes, and anxieties that mark specific historical periods.

Through screenings, readings, and discussions, this online course offers students the opportunity to examine major suspense thriller films in world cinema. We will screen films from different countries in a spectrum of sub-genres (such as detective thrillers, psychological thrillers, spy thrillers, police thrillers, science-fiction thrillers) in order to understand current artistic, critical, ideological, and theoretical debates in cinema and media studies.

This online course will screen and study the most important masterworks in science fiction cinema. Themes and representative works may include, but not limited to, space fantasy, futuristic world, alien intrusions, time travel, disasters, mental powers, biological sciences and mutations. We will also cover key concepts of Media Language, Audience, Institution, and Representation of Gender and Race.
