This course is an in-depth look at the best of British Culture. It has six focal points: History, Literature, and Drama as well as Art History, Archaeology, and Architecture. Lectures and discussions are conducted via Zoom as the class makes its way around London through time and space, looking at historic and archaeological sites, buildings, galleries, museums, and backstage at several theatres and rehearsal spaces. There are also guest lectures by friends working in such fields as theatre, archaeology, architecture, geology, historical biology, and local history. The class will also watch the streaming version of London plays. The archaeological BBC show, TIME TEAM, will be used to investigate sites associated with London in various times. Some guest lectures might take place outside of normal synchronous class hours. Students are expected to write several short papers on various topics.
