Introduction to Chinese Language and Culture

An introduction to the Chinese language and Chinese culture, covering the linguistic, ethnic, and religious diversity of China, and to explore the rich nuances of Chinese culture. The curriculum covers a wide range of topics, including the origins and evolution of Chinese characters, poetry, philosophy, calligraphy, and painting.

Explores Chinese/Sinophone films and media that unsettle the boundary between fiction and nonfiction in this class. Course materials under discussion draw on a variety of genres, forms, and approaches: reportage, mockumentary, docudrama, found footage, true crime series, crowd-sourced video remix, filmed reenactments, essay film and ephemeral media of various kinds, etc.
