Over the semester we will explore the strange mixture of aggression, self-deprecation, righteousness, and hypocrisy that characterizes Juvenal's poetry. Students will develop their facility with the Latin language and familiarize themselves with the literary, social, and political context in which Juvenal wrote. Students will utlize these linguistic and analytical skills to produce well-argued papers.

This seminar will be an introduction to Roman civilization through an unusual lens: the genre of ancient encyclopedias. Instead of following achronological history, we will see the ancient world as the Romans explained it to themselves-through their accounts of geography, technology, social life, economy, professions, and art. While doing so, students will develop both their command of Latin and their academic writing skills.
