Introduces students to the Honors Global Challenges & Solutions living-learning program and to university life. In a small classroom setting, students build skills and experience to thrive within the HGLO community and beyond. Topics include campus resources, professional readiness, networking, community building, and personal development as a global problem-solver.

The world is grappling with many intractable issues, like climate change, pandemics, democratic backsliding, and inequality. How can we use data analysis to help us better understand and work to solve these problems? In this class students will engage with a wide range of issues affecting the entire globe. In addition, they will also gain valuable data science skills by learning the basics of coding in R. No previous programing experience is required.

Critically examines how leaders around the world make sense of complex, often contested information (data) as they work to solve global challenges. The course asks what effective leadership actually looks like in practice, considering how evidence is gathered, interpreted, and sometimes distorted along the way. Drawing on examples at the local, national, and global levels, the course spans private contexts such as transnational conglomerates and public contexts such as governments. Particular attention is given to perspectives from the Global South and indigenous leadership traditions, which complicate and enrich dominant narratives of what leadership can be. Students will assess these varied models and, in turn, reflect critically on their own emerging identities as future leaders.
