Introduces Chinese phonetic system and writing system; develops students' Chinese proficiency on the basic linguistic skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing as well as their cultural competence.

Develops students' communicative competence to ACTFL Novice Mid/High level of proficiency. Introduces students to Chinese culture.

Builds upon the foundation of CHIN206, advancing students' proficiency in both spoken and written Mandarin at the intermediate level through culturally rich, context-driven learning. Emphasizing language as a form of social interaction, the course deepens students' understanding of Chinese pragmatics--how to use Mandarin appropriately across diverse social contexts. Through a task-based, communicative approach, students engage in real-world scenarios such as course enrollment, intercultural dialogue, and campus life interactions, while exploring the cultural nuances behind everyday expressions like greetings. Role-centered activities and a language exchange program with Chinese speakers foster reflection and intercultural competence, empowering learners to navigate Chinese-speaking environments with confidence and cultural sensitivity.

Comprehensive introduction to Chinese and other major languages in the Sino-Tibetan, Altaic, Austroasiatic, and Austronesian families, all of which are spoken in China. Taught in English.

Major works of fiction and drama from 1920 to the present read in the context of social and literary change. Emphasis on western and traditional Chinese influences on the writers and their works. No knowledge of Chinese required.

Study of calligraphy, music, painting, and taichi coupled with critical readings of scholarly and literary texts. Facilitates an understanding of China and Chinese culture through traditional Chinese arts. Taught in English.
