This course examines Chinese language film in the context of globalization and cultural historical transformations of China during the 20th century. The course examines films from China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan with a variety of socio-political themes. We will investigate theevolution of style, genre, and cultural representation in the films of internationally acclaimed directors. In addition, students will learnfilm terminology, theory, and aesthetics for analysis. Students will also read theory, essays, and reviews to examine the interplay among music, imagery, and languages. Active class participation, weekly response papers, and a final paper are course requirements. The course has no language prerequisites. Taught in English.
