Advanced Selected Topics in Architecture; Mapping Networks of Power and Care: Bathroom Design and Reconstruction

Ahead of the redevelopment of the UMD Architecture Building bathrooms and related Fall Symposium and public design charette, this course will undertake a research and network mapping process. Students will grow their definition of accessible architecture and its application in bathroom design while developing their expertise as design justice advocates. The course will include a broad historical survey, touching on subjects including racial and gender segregated restrooms in the U.S., the restroom as a queer space, bathroom bills , and the movement for accessibility on UMD s campus.
