Focuses on gender as a system of social stratification. We will examine theories and research about the institutional and cultural scaffolding that differentiates gender groups in our society. We will learn about how gender permeates major institutions, such as education, employment, family, and the State. We will explore the social forces that shape our perceptions of sex, gender, and sexuality and examine how these affect interpersonal relationships. Throughout the course, we will examine the commonalities and variations of gendered experiences across racial and ethnic groups, socioeconomic status, and sexuality. By the end of the class, you should have an informed understanding of the ways in which gender shapes our lives, experiences, and outcomes.
