"Maker Movement" Approach to Computing; The Internet of Things
Credits: 1
Grad Meth: Reg, P-F, Aud
The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the interconnection of perhaps a trillion Internet-connected devices ranging from tiny "smart dust" sensors and actuators, embedded in almost any human-designed or living thing, to the Internet's "network of networks," to powerful cloud systems, including AI. IoT systems are sometimes called cyber physical systems. We will go from "zero" to "hero", building a "hello world" IoT system quickly. We will examine IoT systems in terms of messages among sensors and actuators; gateways and routers; LANs, WANs, and ISPs; cloud services; and mobile applications. Applications such as smart health, smart homes, smart cities, smart transportation, smart agriculture, and smart factories will be considered. The course will culminate in a student-chosen IoT project, with options for going more deeply into the hardware, software, networking, programming, or cloud aspects of IoT Systems.
