Advanced Projects in Kinesiology; Biopolitics & Physical Culture
Credits: 3
Grad Meth: Reg, S-F
In this course, we will examine the notion of biopolitics (i.e., politics of 'life itself') as it intersects with the domains of physicalculture, science, and biomedicine. We will engage in an in-depthexamination of the view of biopolitics developed by Michel Foucault, as well as engage the ideas of several of Foucault's interlocutors, including thosewho challenge his Eurocentric tendencies. A portion of the course will focus on biopolitical explorations of such constructs as gender, race, and disability and students will have the opportunity to engage in their own biopolitical examination(s) of differing sites of physical culture.
