Approaches early modern Atlantic history through the lens of race, gender, and power. Discusses race and gender as socially constructed categories, reconfigured to maintain and justify particular arrangements of power and inequality. Centers close case studies of particular Atlantic societies, including Mexico, Virginia, Barbados, Ghana, and the Congo.
