This course introduces students to techno-Orientalism, as it is situated at the transnational nexus of science, technology, medicine, and racial capitalism. We examine the different futures Asians and Asian Americans embody, inhabit, and signal, considering how they might reanimate yellow/brown peril and Orientalist discourses as well as state and corporate enforcements of containment, border control, and gender subordination. We also ask how those futures might be repossessed and creatively revised through innovative Asian American literary and cultural works and emergent areas of inquiry within the broader field of Asian American studies.
