First-year poetry workshop. An exploration of poetry that embodies the aesthetics, politics & attitudes of punk. We will engage with themes of anti-authoritarianism, anti-capitalism, anti-racism & sex positivity through subversive modes of poetic expression, while considering how poets challenge literary & cultural norms. The final project will be a DIY mini-zine of students poems.

First-year prose and fiction workshop. Takes a look at writers who choose to tell stories in another time. We will be reading and writing work that develops in a past, future, or dimensional space alternative to the native time of the author. Throughout this process we will be asking which mechanisms are useful in making these jumps in time: What is the role of research in the process of writing historical fiction? How do you construct a believable setting when writing in a world that you have not experienced? How do you make time felt in a dimension that you are imagining out of thin air? Always working torender theory into practice, we are going to write experimentally in nearly every class, with prompts designed to bring even our most serious efforts into a space of play.
