Japan From the Margins

Japan from the Margins takes as its focus the history and representations of various others in Japanese society. They include ethnic Ainu, Okinawans, and Koreans, a historical outcaste group called the Burakumin, and people marginalized for their non-normative gender and sexual practices. Students learn about the historical specificities of each group as well as their common experiences of institutional discrimination as they grapple with larger questions regarding prejudice, nationalism, and social justice. Taught in English.

This combined language/linguistics course introduces Japanese business language and cultural practices from a cross-cultural, cross-linguistic perspective and is designed for intermediate to advanced level learners. Initial background readings in English will be drawn from relevant fields including pragmatics (the study of language use in context), conversation and discourse analysis, and corpus linguistics. Japanese language topics include business telephone conversations, e-mail correspondence, and case studies on multinational corporations such as Nintendo, Walmart, and Coca-Cola. Taught in English and Japanese.

Topics in Japanese Pragmatics; Stylistic Variation in the Films of Miyazaki Hayao and Studio Ghibli

Prereq -- JAPN201 Familiarizes students with fundamental topics in the field of linguistic pragmatics (the study of language use in context) through the lens of stylistic variation in the films of Miyazaki Hayao and Studio Ghibli. Students are introduced to pragmatic concepts such as deixis (how language is used to "point" to social, temporal, and spatial relationships), speech acts (how utterances function as requests, orders, apologies, invitations, etc.), and linguistic (im)politeness. An important area of focus is how the linguistic behavior of various characters contributes to their situated portrayals in these films.

Explores technologies of performance in Japan across the centuries. We will focus on concepts of likeness and liveness as they manifest in performance's mythical origins, the traditions of noh drama, the popular, commercial theatres of kabuki, bunraku, and Takarazuka, and contemporary experiments with robotics, Vocaloids, and other new technologies. Taught in English.
