This combined language/linguistics course introduces Japanese business language and cultural practices from a cross-cultural, cross-linguistic perspective and is designed for intermediate to advanced level learners. Initial background readings in English will be drawn from relevant fields including pragmatics (the study of language use in context), conversation and discourse analysis, and corpus linguistics. Japanese language topics include business telephone conversations, e-mail correspondence, and case studies on multinational corporations such as Nintendo, Walmart, and Coca-Cola. Taught in English and Japanese.
