Selected Topics in Asian American Studies; Preserving Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Histories and Historic Preservation
Credits: 3
Grad Meth: Reg, P-F, Aud
This course introduces students to historic preservation and the ways in which Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders have been interpreted through narratives of archival research of the built environment and landmark designation. Students will gain a greater understanding of I) the role of Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders in US historic preservation practice, 2) the preservation of Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander historic sites (people, places, historical moments) and 3) how to conduct research on Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander historic preservation. Though the class will concentrate on Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders, issues related to how Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander are represented in historic preservation (including historic sites) will be examined within the larger context of America's multicultural preservation landscape and its legacies of histories of the built environments of US territories.
