Chemical biology involves the application of chemical approaches to the study and manipulation of biological systems, as well as harnessing biology to advance chemistry. This course will first highlight the chemical basis of functions of major biopolymers (DNA/RNA, proteins, and glycans), and then focus on chemical approaches to deciphering biological functions through case studies. At the end of the course, students are expected to have a basic understanding of the molecular aspects of important biological processes and to be able to design and employ chemical approaches to tackling interesting biological problems.
