This course examines multilingual AI as both a toolkit for solving real-world problems and a lens for identifying limitations of current methods. Topics include multilingual large language models, representation learning, cross-lingual transfer, fairness, inclusivity, and human-centered evaluation to design technology that supports user needs. Students will read and discuss research papers, and develop projects addressing issues around the design and impact of multilingual AI.
