Topics in Phonology; Action at a distance
Credits: 3
Grad Meth: Reg, P-F, Aud
Exploration of interactions between linearly non-adjacent phonemes, with an emphasis on consonant harmony. Long-distance assimilatory and dissimilatory patterns are used as jumping off points to address current issues in phonological theory. We then examine how to probe different aspects of these questions using behavioral and computational methods, such as perception studies, self-supervised speech models, and artificial grammar learning, among others.
