Special Topics in Persian Studies; Modern Persian Protest Literature
Credits: 3
Grad Meth: Reg, P-F, Aud
Explores modern Persian literature as a form of protest and social critique. Focusing on novels, poetry, essays, and plays produced in modern Iran, we will examine how writers give voice to marginalized perspectives and challenge political oppression, social injustice, and human rights violations. In addition to literary texts, the course will include a focused discussion on the rise of protest themes in contemporary Iranian rap music as a powerful parallel form of resistance. Through close readings, listening sessions, and group discussions, students will gain insight into how both literary and musical expressions reflect the struggles and hopes of a changing society. Taught in Persian.
