Introductory General Relativity, Gravitation, and Cosmology
Credits: 3
Grad Meth: Reg, P-F, Aud
Prerequisite: PHYS273 and MATH243, or equivalent, or permission of instructor.
Introductory principles of Einstein's theory of general relativity for understanding the structure and dynamics of spacetime and matter. Elementary techniques of differential geometry introduced to see how matter moves in curved spacetime. Einstein equation derived to show how matter curves spacetime. Exploration of how general relativity is applied to the study of gravitational waves, black holes and cosmology, providing some basic knowledge for understanding current research and discoveries in these frontline fields.
