Few leaders have as divisive a legacy in world history as Chinese leader Mao Zedong - a visionary revolutionary to some, and a tyrannical megalomaniac to others. Regardless of where one falls on this spectrum, it is evident that Mao had a seismic impact on both 20th century China and global history. In this course, we will examine Mao's life and legacy - his life trajectory, legacy within China, and global Maoism as understood and practiced by the US-based Black Panthers, French intellectuals, the brutal Khmer Rouge, Peru's "Shining Path," and others.
