Native Hawaiians and Other Pacific Islanders (NHPI) occupy a unique, paradoxical space within the "Asian Pacific American" rubric simultaneously indigenous and immigrant, colonized and self-determined. This course examines NHPI populations across the U.S., its territories (American Samoa, CNMI, Guam), and COFA-affiliated nations (Micronesia, Marshall Islands, Palau). Students will perform demographic analyses anduse casestudies to explore the historical and contemporary relationships betweenthese groups and the U.S. Key themes include the legacy of colonization,environmental challenges, cultural identity, and social justice, providing a comprehensive understanding of the diverse NHPI experience today.
