Special Problems in Astronomy; Using AI in Astronomy Research

Prerequisites: ASTR 320 Restrictions: Must be Astronomy major

This is a project-based class in which the students will use AI tools to research a topic area, decide on a specific project, conduct targeted research, and write computer code to accomplish the project goals. The capstone will be a written report on their project and an assessment of the value of AI in their work. The class will treat AI as a tool and a virtual assistant in doing research. The learning goals include how to use AI effectively as a tool, how to validate results generated by AI, and an understanding of where current AI tools are successful and where theyfail. The class sessions will start with example exercises and evolve i nto interactive discussions of progress and difficulties on thestudent projects. Use of AI is required for this course.
