This course examines youth activism and generational political change in Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Thailand, and Indonesia. Between 2022 and 2025, student-led movements toppled governments in Bangladesh and Nepal and reshaped party politics in Thailand and Pakistan, sparkingtalk of an "Asian Spring." Using a historical and comparative approach, the course asks why young people mobilize, how digital platforms enable and constrain protest, and why contentious politics rarely translates into durable electoral power. Students engage foundational scholarship on youth as a political category alongside recent research on each country culminating in a group research project on one of the six countries. No prior background in South or Southeast Asian politics is required.
