This seminar explores contemporary environmental and climate crises across the Americas through the lens of comparative environmental justice. Students will be introduced to and begin developing mastery of comparat ive tools, methods, and theories to analyze the intersection ofclimate hazards and social inequality. By the end of the semester, students will be able (1) to apply an environmental justice lens to critically analyze environmental problems and (2) to design research frameworks that identify the causal mechanisms reproducing and reinforcing climate inequality across class, race, citizenship status, gender, age, and ethnicity. Drawing on global and comparative perspectives, while focusing on cases from North, Central, and South America, the course also introduces students to policy strategies for addressing persistent environmental injustices.
