Seminar in Comparative Politics; The Rise and Fall of Communism

Restriction: Must be in Government & Politics or International Relations program.

The course focuses on the ideologies and institutions of Communism in the 20th and 21st century: Leninism, Stalinism, Maoism, Castroism, Yugoslavia, Romania, Albania, Ethiopia. Lectures and class discussions will focus on the main crises of communism and the rise of dissident, oppositional, democratic movements. The questions we will attempt to answer are: What were the appeals of communism, what were its main goals, and which were the main causes of its collapse?
