Explore Black queer, feminist, and trans studies scholarship that critically analyzes gender, sex, and sexuality. We will grapple with theories that dwell in the contradictions, potentialities, and limits ofthe notion of "Black gender." Students will read texts that convey a sense of ambivalence about the time, language, and performance of genderwhere subjects refuse, subvert, escape, and desire gender in the contextof ananti-Black and homomisic world. Students will also employ methods fromBlack queer studies, queer feminisms, and trans studies and interrogate the relationship between Blackness and gender and analyze how anti/Blackness informs all processes of gender.
