The notion of traditional wives often conjures images of pioneer women or 1950s housewives. Yet the ideas and myths of traditional womanhood have evolved over time and varied by race, sexual orientation, class, and more. This course examines marriage as an economic, legal, political, and social tool in American history from the colonial era through the twentieth century.
