In movies like Pirates of the Caribbean or TheSpongeBob Movie, or video games like Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag,maritime bandits seeking glory and treasure fascinate us. Real piratesdid exist, but their lives differed sharply from these portrayals. Thiscourse explores the economic, political, and cultural impact of piratesin the early modern Atlantic world.
