This course will explore the theoretical paradigms of medical anthropology through examination of the social origins of health, care, pathology, and related concepts, the role of structures of power in their social reproduction, and critical responses to these social and material conditions these concepts produce. In this course, students will critically engage the major theoretical lenses within medical anthropology, with a particular focus on how medical anthropologists theorize the relationship between culture, structural violence, and health. Because the rubric of medical anthropology encompasses ideas and projects of health and culture across the globe, this course will review research on such projects from both the United States and around the world.
