Selected Topics in Computer Science; The Science of Scams

Prerequisites: Minimum grade of C- in CMSC351 and CMSC330; and permission of CMNS-Computer Science department.
An interdisciplinary examination of scams and online fraud, and how to defend against them. Topics include: the psychology of persuasion, the criminal enterprises running scams at industrial scale, the money-laundering pipelines, the legal gaps that let scammers evade justice, and the technology of modern fraud, from domain impersonation to AI voice cloning. Projects emphasize hands-on work with simulated scams.
