This course introduces the scientific and engineering principles of (bio)remediation and their applications for removing (in)organic contaminants from contaminated sites to substantially reduce the risk to human beings and biota. Building upon previous coursework in the topics of microorganisms and chemistry, the content of this course will cover the major themes including biochemical transformation of important contaminants, the microbial ecology of (bio)remediation in the field, overview of (bio)remediation techniques and the factors affecting selection of remedy approaches, feasibility assessment and design of (bio)remediation systems, and discussion of actual cases in the application of (bio)remediation technology to contaminated sites. Students will explore both traditional and emerging (bio)remediation technologies through lectures, case studies, and project-based learning.
