Mass timber refers to a family of engineered wood products of large section size that provide the construction industry with a sustainable and viable alternative to steel and concrete. This course introduces students to the design of mass timber structures, a cutting-edge and eco-friendly building technology. Topics include the analysis and design of dimensional lumber and mass timber components such as Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) and Glued Laminated Timber (Glulam). Specific focus areas include: Tension members; Beams (flexural members); Columns; Floor diaphragms; Shear walls; Connections; Fire-resistance design and acoustic considerations in the design. The course adopts a project-based learning approach to foster practical understanding and application.
