Prepares students for the Penguin Random House Mentorship program application process, which consists of both proofreading and copyediting tests. The skills learned are applicable in a wide variety of contexts, so students not planning to apply to the program are also welcome. Though the focus of the course is the book publishing industry, all editing and proofreading aims to strengthen the author's writing, regardless of genre or document type. Students will focus on issues of consistency, clarity, and coherence--including factual accuracy as well as correctness of grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Students will learn to articulate the various aspects of grammar, mechanics, and typography and to edit with the aim of, retaining the author's original meaning and tone.
