Science fiction and horror are often dismissed as the cinema of the unreal: monsters, aliens, and futures that do not, and will never, exist. This course argues the opposite. Drawing on several methodological approaches, we will examine how these films confront the realities we would rather not face, from the traumas of our history to the trajectories of our present. Each week we watch a film in class, and then meet to discuss, work, and think.
