Practitioners and researchers within human-computer interaction (HCI) are often faced with legal issues related to their HCI work. For instance, there are legal requirements for making web sites and technologies accessible for people with disabilities, requirements for protecting the data privacy of users, and the use of dark patterns which mislead users and may or may not be legal. In addition, there may be questions related to the intellectual property of various interface designs. This course will provide students with the knowledge of U.S. Legal requirements, both at the Federal and state level, related to interface design in the broadest sense, so that they can apply those laws to designing and evaluating interfaces that meet existing legal standards.
