Prerequisite: JOUR201 or permission of instructor (cm495@umd.edu).

This survey course will provide students with the basic knowledge necessary to produce accurate, informative, and compassionate stories about extreme weather, the causes and socioeconomic impacts of disasters, and organized efforts by actors in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors to prepare for and respond to these risks and hazards.While thefocus of this course will be on extreme weather and environmental disasters, the principles learned may apply to news coverage of other forms of disasters, as well.
