Building on the nineteenth-century legacy of intellectual involvement innation-building, addresses how Latin American writers, critics, and public intellectuals have defined their relationship to political power f rom the mid-twentieth century to the present. We will analyze the intellectual s function across distinct regions and political conditions: revolution, dictatorship, democratic transition, and electoral democracy. Course readings will come from varied genres, including fiction, theaterand film, political analysis, and literary-cultural journals.
