This course reviews the cultural risk, protective, and promotive factors that contribute to typical and atypical patterns of development.This course will provide a strong understanding of contemporary models of culture and will illuminate how cultural experiences and processes influence the emergence of adaptation and maladaptation at different levels of the human experience. Topics addressed in the course will include resilience, ethnic-racial socialization, identity, socioeconomic disadvantage, discrimination, racial inequality, acculturation, neurobiology, neuroscience, culturallysensitive interventions, representation and power in research,and appropriate research methods to use with racially and ethnically diversepopulations.
